Speaking at an event organized by SYRIZA on Syros Island, Katrugalos argued that the minority in Western Thrace consists of three different elements.
Emphasizing that minority members have the right to define themselves as Turkish, Katrugalos said, “Anybody can say I am Turkish. That such a right exists has been proven many times by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).” used the phrases.
Katrugalos also touched upon the issue of Xanthi Turkish Union (ITB), whose sign was taken down by the Greek state because of the word “Turkish” in its name, and said:
“The Xanthi Turkish Union has existed since the 1930s and it was not a problem. We opposed the use of this name in the 1980s and 90s.
