Nearly two and a half years after becoming the first country to adopt Bitcoin (BTC) as a legal tender, El Salvador has won an international award for its ambitious and environmentally friendly Bitcoin City, which will be built at the base of a volcano.
Bitcoin City has won the international architectural design award!
The El Salvador government’s Bitcoin City project received an accolade from the jury of global design platform LOOP, out of 705 submissions from 56 countries, Argentine media outlet Noticias de Bariloche (NDB) reported on January 25.

According to the report, the LOOP Design Awards honor the most outstanding projects in architecture and interior design from the perspective of a jury of more than 25 experts and represents a unique opportunity for public recognition.
Sustainability first
The urban project to be built in the southeast of El Salvador “an efficient and sustainable city based on the innovative smart metropolitan model” It was created by Mexican architect Fernando Romero and his company Enterprise Free.
In fact, once built, Bitcoin City will generate its own clean energy from two nearby volcanoes, Tecapa and Conchagua. Specifically, it will be supplied by geothermal energy from the Tecapa volcano and then become completely dependent on the nearby Conchagua volcano.

Romero, who also won the Global Architecture and Design Award for a new Mexico City International Airport project in 2021, added:
“The new public space will be the culmination of decades of research into what people need to live well in an anti-inflationary economy.”
Bitcoin driven design
The designs of the circular city in the shape of Bitcoin were first made public in May 2022 by Nayib Bukele, the president of El Salvador.

Among other things, the design “Aiming to attract the world’s attention by including Bitcoin in the history of money” It contains a large entertainment center as well as a central square with a museum.
