Faced with the risk of drought in Thrace during the planting period, wheat completed its first development with the last rains and became resistant to winter cold.
TurkeyIn Thrace, one of the important wheat production centers of Turkey, the rains following the dry planting period gave the producers a sigh of relief.
Wheat seeds, which the farmers had to plant in arid soil, sprouted with the effect of precipitation and seasonal conditions and completed their first development before the cold winter months.
“The rains came, the wheat germinated, the fields turned green”
University of Trakya Plant Breeding Practice and Research Center Director Prof. Dr. ScarHe told Anadolu Agency (AA) that the producers, who spent their planting work under drought stress, were happy with the rains.
Reminding that the wheat planting period was delayed by one month due to the effects of global climate change, Prof. Dr. Kaya said, “Despite the drought, we told the producers to plant until November 15. Right after that, towards the end of the month, the rains came and the wheat germinated and the fields turned green.” said.
Kaya drew attention to the good development of wheat with the recent rains.
Expressing that wheat is a strategic product, Kaya said:
“The important thing is that the roots of the wheat are formed and it is prepared for winter. With the last rains, there is no risk of drought. The wheat germinated and the fields turned green. It is important that the grass roots of the wheat go down. It is important that the root crown of the plant does not freeze in cold weather. Our expectation is plenty of snow. “It feels like a quilt on it and protects it from extreme cold. At the same time, it acts as a water reservoir for the spring and summer periods as it slowly releases its water. If the next 10-15 days are not too cold, the plants will be fully prepared for winter.”
“We hope to have an abundant and fruitful season”
Kirklareli Ekrem Şaylan, President of the Chamber of Agriculture, also stated that the last rains were very good for wheat.
Explaining that the seeds were planted in dry soil due to the lack of precipitation during the wheat planting period, but the expected precipitation came in the last period, Şaylan said:
“At that time, when we said ‘we will have stressful days’, the precipitation started to fall regularly. Although the wheat germination process was a little troublesome in some regions due to irregular rains, the whole region received very good precipitation during the development period. I hope the rains will continue in a good way. We need cold weather now. “If the snow is effective in the coming days, it will contribute to the further development of wheat. We hope to have a plentiful and fruitful season.”
“Wheat will enter the winter more rooted”
Tekirdag Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Oktay Öcal stated that the farmer, who was worried during planting, was relieved by the rains.
Expressing that the rains are like a “medicine” for wheat, Öcal made the following assessments:
“During the wheat planting, there was no precipitation. The farmers were worried. In recent weeks, there have been good rains during the period when the whole wheat started to rise to the ground. With the rains, the wheat started to grow faster and stronger. The wheat will enter the winter more rooted. With the rooting, the wheat will be more resistant to cold. The next rainfall is important for the crops planted. As long as there is no negativity, yields will be obtained in wheat that will make the farmer happy.”
