Chamber of GEOLOGY Engineers Edirne representative and geological engineer Can Yilmaz, İstanbulStating that the North Anatolian fault line, which covers the wide region including , has completed its 250-year repetition period, he said that it is necessary to prepare for an earthquake as if it will happen every second. Stating that the provinces in Thrace will be severely affected in the possible earthquake in Istanbul, Yılmaz said, ” KahramanmarasIn an earthquake in , 300 kilometers away DiyarbakirA building can be demolished. So, the effects of this should not be considered too close. Its destructive effects actually appear to affect up to 200 kilometers. It is seen that this will have a serious impact on the Edirne and Thrace region,” he said.
Can Yılmaz, Edirne representative of the Chamber of Geological Engineers of TMMOB, evaluated the earthquake that occurred in the region, which is described as the Eastern Anatolian fault line, in the center of Kahramanmaraş, which affected 10 provinces. Stating that the said fault line is not expected to affect the North Anatolian fault line, which includes Istanbul, Yılmaz drew attention to the destructive power of the earthquake. Noting that the North Anatolian fault line has completed its 250-year repetition period, Yılmaz pointed out that the provinces in Thrace would also be seriously affected in the event of a possible Istanbul earthquake. Yılmaz said, “The earthquake occurred in the region where the fault, which is described as the East Anatolian fault line, is located. We do not expect the fault formed in this region to have an effect on the North Anatolian fault line. “We are currently expecting an earthquake that is described as a larger Istanbul earthquake, especially on the North Anatolian fault line,” he said.
‘NORTH ANATOLIA FAULT HAS FILLED THE 250-YEAR REPEAT PERIOD’
Stating that each fault has a characteristic structure, Yılmaz said, “Each fault has its own characteristic structure and there are points where it breaks. At these ruptured points, an energy accumulation occurs after a certain period of time. There is a process determined as a repeating period of once in 250 years in the North Anatolian fault line. Now this process has been completed. Saying 250 years is not in the sense that the time is up and the earthquake will happen, it is now thought to have filled the process and completed. This could happen at any moment, it could happen right now. Therefore, we have to be prepared for this. During this energy discharge, we have to be serious. It will make an impact,” he said.
‘THE WORKS DONE WILL BE OVER 7’
Noting that the energy discharges on the fault expected to break vary according to the energies that will affect, Yılmaz said, “There are evaluations that it will change between 7.2 and 7.8 in the studies on this. These will change constantly. As a result of the studies, it is constantly updated, but it has been seen in the studies that it will be above 7.
TurkeyStating that Istanbul is an earthquake country and settlements should be positioned correctly, Yılmaz said, “We must position our settlements in the right places. Because we are in an earthquake country. We need to examine the parameters very well and our distances from the earthquake are more important. Unfortunately, 18 provinces in Turkey are above the earthquake zone. That is, fault lines pass through them and these are active faults. There is an active fault map published by MTA in 2013. These are important cases. These are , maps that each person can open and look at individually and understand where they are going. Elazig We described it after the earthquake. Accordingly, we expected a law to be passed. Unfortunately, that did not happen,” he said.
‘RESISTANT BUILDINGS SHOULD BE INSTALLED ON RESISTANT FLOORS’
Emphasizing that it is not preferred to position the buildings especially on alluvial soils, Yılmaz said, “When we look here, we do not prefer the settlements to be located on alluvial soils, in areas where the groundwater level is high due to the grain size. Because in these regions, the earthquake is felt most intensely and it takes longer periods of time. It is known that this process has less impact and occurs in a shorter time in rock regions, but we cannot directly say that they will not affect them and that they will be better or much worse there. Because each earthquake will have a different effect. We need to turn it into floors and create a structure that can be used,” he said.
‘THREE WILL HAVE A SERIOUS EFFECT IN THRACE’
Emphasizing that Thrace will also be affected in the event of more than 7 possible earthquakes in Istanbul, Yılmaz said, “When we see the center of Edirne as the farthest point from an Istanbul earthquake in Thrace, it has a distance of 180 kilometers. Here, too, it actually sets a good precedent. “In an earthquake in Kahramanmaraş, a building may collapse in Diyarbakır, 300 kilometers away. That is to say, the effects of this should not be considered too close. It is seen that its destructive effects actually affect up to 200 kilometers. This is currently seen to have a serious impact on the Edirne and Thrace region. In previous earthquakes, 1912 in resignation It is seen that there was very serious damage in the records of the earthquake. Although there were single-storey and 2-storey buildings at that time, it is seen that there were casualties and many damaged structures.
Stating that it is necessary to prepare for an earthquake as if it will happen every second of the day, Yılmaz said, “Actually, this is not only the North Anatolian fault line. We should not talk just by looking at it. Because there are many systems in it. The North Anatolian fault line, the East Anatolian fault line, EgeWe have horst and graben systems in . These are systems that produce serious earthquakes. We have to be prepared for it as if it will happen every day, every moment, every second. What can be done in the society during these earthquakes and how we should act against the disaster should be given primarily through trainings. These should be started in schools and added to the curriculum immediately. People should know what geology is, what earthquake is, what rocks are, so that they should become more conscious and know where, how, what they will live and what they will face in the next processes,” he said.
