GOOD Party‘s “investigation of agricultural drought” proposal, AKP and MHP It was rejected by the votes of the MPs. GOOD Party Konya Deputy Fahrettin Yokus“AK Party The government did not provide adequate support to agriculture and farmers and unfortunately failed in the fight against drought. In the 2023 budget General Directorate of State Hydraulic WorksThe fact that only 51 billion liras was allocated to Turkey reveals the insincerity of the government in the fight against drought and water,” he said.
In the General Assembly of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, today, the proposal to put the research proposal of the IYI Party on agricultural drought before other proposals was discussed. Explaining the rationale for the proposal, IYI Party Konya Deputy Fahrettin Yokus said:
“THE NUMBER OF LARGE SMALL POCKETS OCCURRED IN DIFFERENT PLACES ACROSS KONYA REACHED 2,600”
“The world The negative effects of the climate crisis, which is gradually increasing on the world, continue to increase in our country. United Nations of the Food and Agriculture Organization Turkey According to the report; Medium The sinkholes formed by the withdrawal of groundwater and the collapse of the soil in Anatolia appear as signs of long-term droughts. Especially in Konya Karapinar As of the end of last year, the number of potholes in the region has exceeded 500. In Konya, the number of large and small potholes formed in different places has reached 2,600. The formed sinkholes pose a danger both in agriculture and in residential areas in the region. Although sinkholes are commonly seen in Konya, Sivas, Batman, Cankiri, Eskisehir, Diyarbakir, Manisa ve Opium started to be seen in our provinces as well.
According to the researches, Konya basin, Buyuk Menderes and Kızılırmak basins signal drought. 20 percent of the surface waters in these basins will be lost in 2030, 35 percent in 2050 and 50 percent in 2100.
“OUR LAKES ARE DRYING, OUR UNDERGROUND WATER RESOURCES ARE DECREASING”
Our lakes are drying up, our underground water resources are decreasing. Unfortunately, the rulers of our country do not take any measures in these matters. Turkey’s largest freshwater lake Beysehir Lakehas shrunk by 112 square kilometers in the last 20 years. Average water depth decreased from 26 meters to 5.5 meters. In other words, one fifth of Beyşehir Lake has disappeared. I have repeatedly stated that ‘Our Beyşehir Lake is drying up and getting polluted’, but we could not make our voices heard. On the other hand, many lakes in the Lake District have dried up. Aksehir and Meke Lake is at the beginning of our drying lakes. I have repeatedly stated that the biggest problem of the Konya Plain is water. ‘Channel Us İstanbul not, Channel Konya, Channel GOP is needed,’ I insisted. Turkey is one of the countries experiencing water stress. For this reason, it is extremely important to use our country’s water resources correctly. We need to protect our fresh water resources without wasting it, and pour even a drop of our water into the seas.
Rising temperatures and changes in precipitation regime directly affect agricultural products. This situation also affects access to water used for irrigation of agricultural fields. Our country is also experiencing a drought problem independent of the climate crisis. The direct effects of drought on agricultural products also cause a decrease in the amount and quality of agricultural products dependent on rainwater and made with irrigation systems. Considering all these effects, climate change; It also negatively affects agriculture, food production and food quality.
last year in Turkey Central Anatolia RegionThe intense drought experienced in Turkey significantly reduced agricultural production and had a negative impact. Unfortunately, Turkey will face the problem of drought again in 2023. Especially in terms of grain production, the significant decrease in precipitation is worrying. Insufficient grain production poses a serious threat to food safety. In the coming years, Mediterrenian ve Central Anatolia It is also stated by experts that we will be adversely affected by climate change, especially in our regions.
“AK PARTY GOVERNMENT HAS FAILURE TO FIGHT THE DROUGHT ALSO”
The AK Party government did not provide adequate support to agriculture and farmers, and unfortunately failed in the fight against drought. In the 2023 budget State Hydraulic Works The fact that only 51 billion liras was allocated to the General Directorate reveals the insincerity of the government in the fight against drought and water issues.
The World Agriculture Organization (FAO) lists some of the measures that can be taken based on climate change scenarios as follows: Conducting disaster analyzes for agricultural drought in a way that more reliable data can be obtained; It is necessary to protect the physical, chemical and biological productivity of the soil against the effects of climate change, to plan the water resources to be used in agriculture in a sustainable way, to develop drought-resistant seed varieties and to increase their numbers.
“NATURAL ASSETS ARE LOCKED WITH INCREDIBLE RAPIDITY”
HDP took the floor upon the group proposal of the IYI Party. Myrtle Deputy Ridvan Turan he said:
“The main problem here is the contradiction between what humanity wants from nature and what nature can give. Nature and natural assets are being plundered at an incredible rate in order for production to increase further and growth to increase even more. This is the case across the world. “Under normal circumstances, the rest should not be used. But natural assets are constantly decreasing as a result of the ambition to make more profit, to accumulate more wealth. The 21-year AKP rule has become the pinnacle of this business in Turkey. Now we are talking about the drought issue, but why is it ours?” We don’t have a water policy, we’re not talking about it. It’s not just about reducing the amount of water, but also the destruction of usable water assets. The vast majority of freshwater resources are exposed to chemical pollution.
Nearly 2,000 industrial facilities lined up along the Ergene basin in Thrace pollute the clean water they have drawn from underground sources and flood the stream. As a result, an extraordinary amount of water pollution is taking its toll. Thanks to its deep discharge, it is also currently MarmaraWe all know that the water quality in Marmara has been incredibly negatively affected. The issue is, on the one hand, the absolute decrease in the amount of water, and on the other hand, the disappearance of the quality of the water. In the first place, the sector that uses the most water is agriculture, followed by industry. However, although the Minister of Agriculture tells it every year when he comes here, an irrigation policy according to the crop pattern has not been made dominant in Turkey yet.
“TURKEY IS NOT A WATER-RICH COUNTRY. WE HAVE THINGS TO DO ABOUT DROUGHT”
Mersin Deputy speaking on behalf of CHP Cengiz Gokcel also said:
“We are exposed to more disasters every year due to the climate crisis. Drought is also increasing its impact day by day due to the climate crisis. In the past years, precipitation has been at a very low level compared to seasonal normals. We feel this very heavily, especially this year. We estimate that the yield will be very low. Our farmers who cultivate grain say that they irrigate their fields in the middle of winter, since there is no rain in January. Our farmers, who do not have the opportunity to irrigate, say that they have given up the product this year, saying, “We are in the mercy of Allah.”
Turkey is not a water-rich country. We have things to do about the drought. With the climate crisis, our water resources are under threat. When you go to Konya, you will come across the sinkholes formed due to the ground water withdrawn. This is due to wild irrigation and groundwater withdrawal. Now we have to make a plan. We need to develop drought resistant varieties. We need to reduce the production of products that need water and create new varieties. Irrigation investments need to be implemented quickly. We have to switch to the basin-based producer model. We are in power with basin-based supports; We will carry out a planned agriculture with investments in ponds, dams and irrigation systems. In our power, we will give a sigh of relief to all our farmers.”
The proposal of the IYI Party was rejected by the votes of AKP and MHP deputies after the negotiations.
