TEKIRDAG Namik Kemal University (NOW) Corlu Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Prof. Dr. Lokman Hakan Tecer stated that the drought in the country has turned into a reality of life and that what needs to be done should be discussed. Tecer said, “450 thousand tons of water is consumed per day in Thrace. After treating this water, we do not have the luxury to discharge it.
TurkeyHigher-than-normal seasonal temperatures in Turkey have increased the risk of drought. In particular, some dams and ponds give alarm in terms of occupancy, TekirdagThere were also water withdrawals in the Bıyıkali and Yazır ponds in the Süleymanpaşa district of Turkey. Tekirdag Namık Kemal University Corlu Engineering Faculty Dean Prof. Dr. Lokman Hakan Tecer emphasized that urgent measures should be taken. Tecer said that drought is effective all over the world and that the measures to be taken must be implemented, “Yes, it has become a reality of our lives. Drought with climate change, the increase in temperatures, the seasons are slowly shifting from their normal periods. Of course, we talked about these issues, but these are close, middle and It will have very serious consequences in the long run. Therefore, it is time to combat them and enter a process of adaptation compatible with climate change. What needs to be done must now be talked about. These things need to be done in order to learn to live in drought, to protect the state, institutions, industrialists, individuals and citizens from the damage caused by drought. He has work and procedures to do,” he said.
‘WE SHOULD START PROTECTING WATER RESOURCES’
Stating that the protection of water resources in the fight against drought should be started with the water used in industry and individually, Prof. Dr. Tecer said, “There are points where we need to transform our way of life, both intellectually and practically. In the fight against drought, we need to start with the protection of water resources from agricultural irrigation, water used in industrial production and the water we use individually. First of all, the industrialist has to produce with new technologies that consume less water. This will not be enough. There is no thesis today, there is a process that is too late, It needs to be purified, recovered and used in the process,” he said.
‘WE HAVE NO LUXURIOUS DISCHARGE’
Underlining that 450 thousand cubic meters of water is consumed per day, especially in industrial activities in Thrace, Tecer said, “Today we are in the Thrace region. Do you know what is the daily amount of water consumed in industrial activities here? Approximately 450 thousand cubic meters of water is consumed per day, and this water is purified to a certain degree. We don’t have the luxury of discharging this water anymore after we treat it. Some of this water needs to be purified and recycled starting today and reused in the process. We know this is not an easy task, but it will definitely contribute. Because projects related to the recovery of waste water all over the world “It has already started to be implemented and it has already been expanded. We are late, we are still spending time. We need to find a more sustainable methodology for this with appropriate technologies and new methods. We need to purify our waste water, recover it and use it again in the industry,” he said.
‘THE DRIP IRRIGATION IS NEEDED’
Noting that the drip irrigation method can be made more widespread in agricultural irrigation, Tecer said, “We consume a large body of water in agricultural irrigation. We need to abandon this with wild irrigation and switch to a more drip irrigation, rain-based irrigation model. This is something that can be achieved by educating our farmers and making them sensitive. It can only happen if it follows, subsidizes, encourages and supports it,” he said. Stating that the contribution of savings to be made in daily life style is important in preventing drought, Prof. Dr. Tecer said, “Of course, all this will not be enough. We also need to transform into a way of life that can meet our needs with less water by consciously consuming water in our daily lives, by consciously consuming it and not wasting it. Maybe we may have lost some generations in this sense, our habits may not allow us, but education starting from primary school. If we include curricula about our water and the protection of our water in our system, if we start educating our children today, tomorrow and the next generations will have transformed a lifestyle that can protect their water into a behavior. We can reduce the effects of drought. After all, the country has a water source, a water potential. “We can prevent the damage it may cause,” he said. Süleymanpaşa Chamber of Agriculture President İmdat Saygı stated that they have not seen such a drought for 50 years, and said, “We experienced 2022 as a dry year. We entered 2023. There is no problem in wheat at the moment. We have received a certain amount of precipitation, but there is no water in the streams at the moment. Dams are as you know. it fell below half. Farmer, they want to see at least a snow. If it rains in April in May, we will have a crop. We are living in a truly unprecedented year. We have not seen such a year. We have not experienced such a drought in 50 years. This year is very low. We wait, hopefully the weather reports “It will show rain in the coming days. If it does, our farmers will be relieved,” he said.
