TARGET: Carbon Neutral

Atatürk Cultural Center ve ’nda, With the launch of the Sustainable Energy and Climate Change Action Plan, Istanbul Enerji A.Ş. A cooperation protocol was signed with the General Directorate.
Making the opening speech of the meeting, Climate Change and Zero Waste Manager Savaş Çerkez said that one of the most important problems of the world is climate change. Stating that every country has taken urgent measures and measures at national and local scale due to the danger that climate change may cause, Çerkez said, “Especially after the signing of the Paris Climate Agreement, local governments, as well as national governments, began to take important roles in the fight against climate change.”
Drawing attention to the fact that Edirne Mayor Recep Gürkan signed the European Agreement of Mayors for Climate and Energy, Çerkez said, “With the decision taken by our Council in January 2022, we are also the first Provincial Municipality to establish a Climate Change Directorate. In order to make our cities more prepared for climate change, our Municipality will start working on the Sustainable Energy Action Plan and Climate Change Adaptation Plan, preparing a Greenhouse Gas Inventory, Sustainable Energy and Climate Change Action Plan, as a result of the signatures to be signed here today.”
Providing information about the works to be carried out with the said action plan, İstanbul Enerji A.Ş. General Manager Yüksel Yalçın said, “We will try to share with you how our work on Sustainable Energy and the Action Plan will begin, with which team it will take, how long it will take, and what the results of these studies will be, and to what extent it can be carried with the participation of not only the municipality but all of Edirne. . When our Honorable Mayor Recep Gürkan came to Istanbul, together with the Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu and the heads of provinces, important topics of Local Administrations were determined and studies were carried out to carry out some joint activities. One of the scopes of these studies is the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan. After the 2000s, we all see how a one-degree increase in temperature and then a plus one-degree increase changed the world, and how important a 1-degree increase is,” he said, drawing attention to climate change and the studies to be done on this subject.
Noting that they started the process after the signing of the European Agreement of Mayors for Climate and Energy, Edirne Mayor Recep Gürkan pointed out that energy is a product that affects the whole of daily life and is needed.
Emphasizing that this process, which was initiated together with Istanbul Energy, is very important, Gürkan said, “Today, people may not be aware of this, but it is more important work than the asphalt we build, the infrastructure we build. Make sure of that. If we are not successful in this business, if humanity is not successful, we will not have a world where we can live with today’s comfort in the very near future. Our goal is clear. Our target is carbon neutral… We plan to reach the target in 2050. I hope we reach it in 2040, 2035. But if we do not reach carbon neutrality, our children and grandchildren will not be able to live in a world like we do. That’s what’s clear,” he said.
Stating that the most basic needs of people are shelter and nutrition, President Gürkan said, “With climate change, the world’s food resources will gradually lose their productivity. Arable lands, agricultural lands and especially water will decrease gradually,” he said.
Gürkan, who thanked Ekrem İmamoğlu, Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, for his support, said, “Information is very important. He who has knowledge also owns the future. Therefore, it is very valuable for us that Istanbul Energy partners with us with its 60 years of experience. We will put this into practice with all districts of Edirne. Because, in this process, it is not possible to separate the districts from us, nor to separate Istanbul from Edirne, nor to separate Turkey from other countries. We all affect each other either positively or negatively. As , we have been producing electricity from landfill gas since 2018. We are one of the first local governments in Turkey in this sense. We demonstrated our determination at this point in 2018. On November 25, 2018, we produced the first electricity from methane. We have produced approximately 30 million KiloWatt Hours of electricity in a period of 3.5 years from landfill gas. This is a very, very good figure for a municipality of our scale. This was very important in terms of both supporting our country’s resources in energy production and reducing carbon emissions on the other hand. Now we have installed our second engine, obtained its license, and as of this year, we are increasing our capacity to 3 megawatts.”
Later, Edirne Mayor Recep Gürkan, Istanbul Energy A.Ş. Signed a cooperation protocol with the General Manager Yüksel Yalçın.
